Traces of sculptors of Buddhist statues

この建物の近くに、平安時代中期に活躍した仏師 定朝をはじめ、その一族・子弟・子孫が長く居住して彫刻に励んだ仏所がありました。彼らの面影が、目の前に感じられるような、ひっそりとした午後のひと時でした。
Near this building was a Buddhist temple where Jocho, a Buddhist priest active in the mid-Heian period, and his family and descendants lived for a long time and worked hard on their sculptures. It was a quiet afternoon when I could feel their presence in front of me.

知恩院の三門へ続く参道には、江戸時代初期に植栽されたと思われるムクロジの木があります。ムクロジの果皮はサポニンを含むことから石鹸の代用とされ、また硬い種子は念珠として用いられるなど、様々なかたちを変えながら、人々と共に、歴史を積み重ねてきました。このムクロジの木は、分布北限に近い京都で大木になることは稀であり、貴重な大木とされています。このムクロジの木の、きらきらと生い茂る、涼しげな新緑に惹かれて、知恩院三門を描きました。その時、中国から観光に来られた素敵な新婚のご夫婦に絵を気に入って頂き、その場で、一緒に記念撮影をして頂いたりして楽しく過ごしていると、鮮やかな緑がさらに眩しく感じました。
On the path leading to the three gates of Chion-in Temple, there is a Sapindus mukurossi tree, thought to have been planted in the early Edo period. The bark of the Sapindus mukurossi tree contains saponin, which is used as a substitute for soap, and the hard seeds are used as prayer beads. The Sapindus mukurossi tree rarely grows into a large tree in Kyoto, which is close to the northern limit of its distribution and is regarded as a precious large tree. I was attracted by the glistening, lush, incredible fresh greenery of the Sapindus mukurossi tree and drew the three gates of Chion-in Temple. At that time, a lovely newlywed couple from China who had come for sightseeing liked my drawing and took a commemorative photograph with me on the spot, which made me feel even more dazzled by the vivid green.

夜、灯る街灯と乗客を待つタクシーを向かい側の歩道から描きました。新しい画材を買ったばかりで、とにかく何か表現したいという気持ちで描き始めた作品です。
I painted the lit street lamps and the taxi waiting for passengers at night from the pavement opposite. I had just bought new art materials and started this work simply because I wanted to express something.

ここが知人の結婚式場だったので、桜咲く季節に、お祝いとして、鴨川沿いにある鮒鶴の建物を描きました。高瀬川の茂みに立ち、鴨が優雅に泳ぐ高瀬川に落ちそうになる程、首を後ろに折って、眩しい光を浴びながら、高く見上げて描きました。
As this was the wedding venue of an acquaintance, I drew the funa-tsuru building along the Kamo River as a celebration during the cherry blossom season. Standing in the grasses along the Takase River, I drew it, looking up high into the dazzling light, with my neck bent back so far that I almost fell into the Takase River, where the ducks were swimming gracefully.

ビルの窓から見える東京駅の様子を、何か残したい一心で描きました。それまで、東京駅をビルの窓から見下ろす機会は、なかなかありませんでしたが、こうして見てみると、丸の内の駅舎の屋根には、小さい窓がたくさんあり、細工されていたことが良く分かりました。
I drew this picture of Tokyo Station from a building’s window with the sole intention of leaving something behind. Until then, I had never had the opportunity to look down on Tokyo Station from a building window, but looking at it this way, I could see that the roof of the Marunouchi station building had many small windows.

宮大工の棟梁 西岡常一氏が京都市内で唯一手がけた現存している建造物です。西岡氏の仕事を目の前にして、繊細な偉大さを感じ、感動しながら描きました。ご近所の方々にも親切にして頂き、さらに感動して、真っ直ぐな、熱い思いを込めて描きました。
It is the only surviving structure in Kyoto City built by Tsunekazu NISHIOKA, a master carpenter specializing in building shrines and temples. Mr. Nishioka’s gate moved me to draw it, and I felt the delicate greatness of his work in front of my eyes. The kindness of the neighbours moved me even more, and I drew it with straight, passionate feelings.

夜に近づく頃、京都の新京極ろっくんプラザに置かれた、赤い絨毯が敷かれた長椅子に腰を下ろし、描きました。買い物へ向かう人たちの向こうに時々見える、ひっそりと静かに、でも、思いっきり満開に咲く桜が印象的でした。
As night approached, I sat down on a red-carpeted chaise longue in the Shinkyogoku Rokkun Plaza in Kyoto and painted. I was impressed by the cherry blossoms, which I could sometimes see beyond the people going shopping, quietly and silently but in full bloom.

京都の玄関口、京都駅。きらきら光る太陽の日差しの下、ダイナミックな大階段、上下左右に重なる動線、次々に吸い込まれていく人々の動きを眺めながら、描きました。台湾からのtouristsと、「日本が大好き！」「ありがとう！」という話で盛り上がりながら描いたのが楽しかったです。
Kyoto Station is the gateway to Kyoto. I did line drawings under the glistening sunlight, looking at the dynamic grand staircase, the overlapping lines of movement up, down, left, and right, and the movement of people being drawn into one after another. It was fun to draw while talking with the tourists from Taiwan about how much they love Japan, saying, “I love Japan!” “Thank you.”

高校１年生の時に描いた油絵です。London の National Portrait Galleryで、一枚だけ残っていたというお土産の絵はがきの写真を、油絵で描き、当時、一緒に額縁も作りました。こんなに穏やかな笑顔があったんだと、こんな笑顔のままで、生きていけたらいいなと思いました。
I did this oil painting in my first year of high school. It is based on a souvenir postcard photo from the National Portrait Gallery in London, of which only one was left. I also made a frame for it at the time. I didn’t know that he had such a peaceful smile. I hope to live with such a smile on my face.
偶然通りかかって、お越し頂いた方々から、書籍化して欲しいとアドバイスを頂いたり、不思議なご縁で、楽しく賑やかに、ギャラリー空間を彩って頂きました。
Some people who happened to pass by and came to this exhibition advised us to publish our work in our book form, and through a curious coincidence, we were able to create a fun, lively gallery space.
